Road trains are the longest and heaviest vehicles on Queensland roads. A triple road train can exceed 50 metres in length and 130 tonnes gross mass. When one of these combinations breaks down, the recovery is not a one-truck job. It requires planning, multiple assets, and operators who have done it before.

Why Road Train Towing Is Complex

A road train typically consists of a prime mover and two or three trailers connected by converter dollies. When the prime mover fails, the entire combination stops. But you cannot just connect a tow truck to the front and pull 130 tonnes down the highway. The braking capacity, the articulation points, and the sheer length of the combination make that approach impractical and unsafe.

The Recovery Approach

The standard approach is to decouple the trailers and deal with each component separately. The prime mover is towed to a repairer. Each trailer is either left secured on site for later collection or collected by a replacement prime mover.

Decoupling road train trailers on the side of a highway is not a quick job. Converter dollies need to be disconnected, air lines separated, and electrical connections broken. Each trailer needs to be chocked and secured against rolling. If the combination is on a gradient, securing the trailers is critical before any uncoupling begins.

Equipment Required

Towing a road train prime mover is similar to towing any heavy prime mover, but the operators need to be experienced with the specific coupling systems and air brake configurations used in road train combinations. Different operators run different configurations, and the decoupling procedure varies.

For very remote breakdowns where a replacement prime mover is not quickly available, we may tow the prime mover with one trailer attached and arrange separate collection for the remaining trailers.

Compliance

Road trains operate under specific NHVR regulations covering routes, mass limits, and operating conditions. The recovery operation needs to maintain compliance. Towing a decoupled trailer through a zone where road trains are not permitted requires either a route deviation or a permit.

Experience Matters

Road train recovery is one of those jobs where experience makes the difference between a 4-hour operation and a 12-hour operation. An operator who has decoupled road train combinations in various conditions and configurations works through the process efficiently. One who has not may be safe but slow, and every hour on the side of a highway adds cost and risk.
