The three things that trip up most over-dimensional transport jobs are escort arrangements, travel time curfews, and routes that look fine on paper but have a problem in the real world. This article covers each one in practical terms.

Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicles, or pilot vehicles, are the eyes and ears of an over-dimensional transport. They travel ahead of and behind the load, warning approaching traffic and managing intersections. For wide loads, the front escort carries a height measuring device to check clearances before the load reaches them.

The pilots communicate with the transport driver via UHF radio. They call out oncoming vehicles, overhead hazards, road geometry issues, and any changes in conditions along the route.

Pilot vehicle operators must hold a Pilot Vehicle Driver Authorisation issued by the relevant state authority. They must display the correct warning signs on their vehicles. The signs must be the right size, the right colour, and must say the right words. "OVERSIZE LOAD" is not the same as "WIDE LOAD" for regulatory purposes.

The number of escorts depends on the load width. One escort is common for moderately oversize loads. Two or three escorts are required for very wide loads. Police escort may be required for the widest loads.

Travel Curfews

Over-dimensional permits typically restrict when the load can travel. Common restrictions include daylight hours only for loads above certain width thresholds, no travel during peak traffic periods on specific corridors, no travel on public holidays or during major events, and specific curfew windows near bridges, tunnels, and school zones.

Curfew conditions are written into the permit. Breaching them invalidates the permit. If a transport starts on time but runs into delays and hits a curfew boundary, the driver must stop and wait until the permitted travel window reopens.

Route Planning

Route planning for over-dimensional loads goes beyond choosing the shortest path on a map. The route must accommodate the load dimensions at every point along the way.

Width matters at narrow bridges, median barriers, road furniture, and oncoming traffic lanes. A 3.5-metre-wide load on a road with 3.5-metre lanes does not leave room for error. Height matters at every bridge, power line, traffic signal gantry, and tree canopy. A load that clears most overhead obstacles but strikes one creates damage, delays, and liability. Length matters at intersections, roundabouts, and tight curves where a long combination needs more space to turn.
