Heavy Haulage vs Oversize Load Transport: What Is the Difference?

People use "heavy haulage" and "oversize load transport" interchangeably. They are related but not identical. Understanding the difference matters because the permit requirements, equipment needs, and planning processes differ.

Heavy Haulage

Heavy haulage is the transport of loads that exceed standard mass limits. The load may be perfectly within normal dimensions but is simply too heavy for a standard vehicle to carry legally. A 50-tonne transformer on a trailer that is 2.4 metres wide and 4.0 metres high is a heavy haulage job. It does not look oversize, but its weight exceeds standard mass limits.

Heavy haulage focuses on weight management. The transport vehicle needs sufficient axle capacity to carry the load within legal mass limits per axle group. Bridge weight limits along the route become critical because a bridge rated for 42.5 tonnes will not accommodate a 60-tonne combination. The pavement condition matters because very heavy vehicles can damage weak road surfaces.

Oversize Load Transport

Oversize load transport covers loads that exceed standard dimension limits. Width, height, or length beyond the thresholds. An excavator that is 3.2 metres wide on a low loader is an oversize load even if the total weight is within standard limits. A wind turbine blade that is 40 metres long is dramatically oversize even if it weighs relatively little.

Oversize transport focuses on spatial management. Can the load fit through the road space available? Will it clear bridges, power lines, traffic signals, and tree canopies? Can it negotiate intersections and roundabouts? Does it need escort vehicles to warn other road users?

Where They Overlap

Many loads are both heavy and oversize. A large excavator on a low loader may exceed both mass and dimension limits simultaneously. In this case, both sets of permit conditions apply, and the transport needs to satisfy the requirements for both.

Why It Matters

If you contact a transport company and ask for "heavy haulage" when your load is actually oversize, the company may quote based on mass management equipment and then discover on the day that escort vehicles and oversize permits are needed. The reverse also applies.

Being specific about your load dimensions and weight when requesting a quote ensures the transport company plans for the actual job, not a guess.
