Why Flood Recovery Is Different

A flood-damaged vehicle is not the same as a broken-down vehicle. Water ingress affects engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, and fuel systems. A truck that sat in floodwater for 12 hours may look intact from the outside but be mechanically destroyed inside.

Starting a flood-damaged engine can cause catastrophic damage if water has entered the cylinders. Hydrostatic lock occurs when incompressible water in the cylinder prevents the piston from completing its stroke. The result is bent connecting rods and a destroyed engine.

Recovery Process

Wait for the water: Recovery cannot begin until water levels have dropped enough for safe access. Attempting to recover vehicles from flowing or deep water puts the recovery crew and their equipment at risk.

Assessment: Once accessible, each vehicle is assessed individually. How deep was the water? How long was the vehicle submerged? Is there visible damage? Is the vehicle in a stable position or at risk of further movement?

Recovery: Flood-affected vehicles are typically winched or towed to higher ground, not driven. Even if the engine appears to turn over, driving a flood-damaged vehicle risks further damage. Our recovery trucks can reach vehicles on soft, muddy ground using long winch lines and snatch blocks.

Transport: Recovered vehicles go to a repairer for assessment or to a holding yard pending insurance decisions. Transport is by tilt tray or boom truck, not under the vehicle's own power.

Insurance Considerations

Flood damage to heavy vehicles often results in significant claims. Insurers typically require detailed documentation of the flood level, the vehicle's position, the duration of submersion, and the visible damage. We provide photos and condition notes as part of our recovery documentation.

Some insurers write off flood-damaged vehicles without attempting repair, particularly if the water level exceeded the dashboard height. This decision rests with the insurer and their assessor, not with the recovery operator.

Preparation
