Heavy Vehicle Breakdown on the Gateway Motorway: What to Do

The Gateway Motorway carries some of the heaviest traffic volumes in Brisbane. Port traffic, north-south freight, airport access, and general commuter traffic all converge on this corridor. A heavy vehicle stopped on the Gateway creates immediate safety and congestion problems, and the longer it sits there, the worse both get.

If your truck, bus, or heavy vehicle has broken down on the Gateway, here is what to do and what happens next.

Immediate Steps

Get off the road if you can. Even a partial pullover onto the shoulder is better than blocking a live lane. If the vehicle will still roll, use momentum to coast as far left as possible. Activate your hazard lights immediately. They are the first warning other drivers will see.

If you can safely exit the cab, put on your high-visibility vest and set up warning triangles behind your vehicle. On a motorway with speed limits of 80-100 km/h, place the first triangle at least 200 metres behind the truck. If you cannot safely exit, stay in the cab with your seatbelt on. Standing between a disabled truck and oncoming traffic at 100 km/h is one of the most dangerous things a person can do.

Call for Help

Call your towing provider first. Give them the exact location. On the Gateway, this means the direction of travel (northbound or southbound), the nearest overpass or exit, and whether you are in a lane or on the shoulder. A GPS pin from your phone is ideal because it removes any ambiguity about your position.

Tell them what vehicle you are driving, what failed, and whether the vehicle can be steered and braked. This information determines which tow truck they dispatch.

If you are blocking a live lane, call 000 as well. Queensland Police will respond and can arrange traffic management until the tow truck arrives. TMR (Transport and Main Roads) monitors the Gateway with cameras and may already be aware of your vehicle, but do not rely on that.

What Happens on Scene

The tow truck operator will approach from behind your vehicle, using their truck as a physical shield between you and traffic. They will set up traffic management including cones, signs, and flashing lights before they start working on your vehicle.

For a straightforward breakdown, the operator connects your vehicle to the tow truck and clears the motorway. The goal is to get the disabled vehicle moving as quickly as safely possible, because every minute a lane is blocked costs the road network money and increases the risk of a secondary incident.

For a more complex situation like a rollover, jack-knife, or a vehicle that cannot be easily moved, the tow truck operator coordinates with police and TMR. Lane closures may be extended, and additional equipment may be called in.

Where Your Vehicle Goes

You choose the destination. If you have a preferred repairer, the operator will tow there. If the repairer is closed, the operator can take the vehicle to a secure holding yard until the repairer opens. If you are unsure, the operator can suggest nearby heavy vehicle workshops.
